Discover the Wisconsin Heritage Peony Garden
Tucked along the scenic Rotary River Walk on 110 West Mill Street in Beaver Dam lies a true hidden gem: the Wisconsin Heritage Peony Garden. This American Peony Society reference garden, one of only thirteen reference gardens in the United States, celebrates the beauty, history, and innovation of one of the world’s most beloved blooms. It’s a breathtaking tribute to the peony—and to the people who have dedicated their lives to cultivating it.

A Garden with a Story
Established in 2021, the Wisconsin Heritage Peony Garden was born from a vision to honor Wisconsin’s rich horticultural legacy. Thanks to the collaboration of Ovans Peony Farm, the Beaver Dam Chamber and Visitor Center/Tourism, the Wisconsin Peony Society, the Beaver Dam Rotary, and the City of Beaver Dam, this garden has blossomed into a destination unlike any other. Rare and historic varieties—many donated by Wisconsin hybridizers and Ovans Peony Farm—grace the winding paths, creating a living showcase of peony excellence.

Best Time to Visit
The garden is at its most beautiful during the late spring and summer months. For the full peony experience, plan your visit during peak bloom – typically from the last week of May through the second weekend of June, depending on weather conditions. This is when the garden bursts into color and fragrance, offering a truly unforgettable display.

A Living Legacy
As you stroll through the garden, you’ll encounter a stunning collection of cultivars: from fragrant heirlooms to bold, modern hybrids in striking colors and forms. Among them are Gold Medal winners, Award of Landscape Merit recipients, and beloved peonies bred by Wisconsin’s most accomplished hybridizers including Scott Parker, William Seidl, Nate Bremer and Roger Anderson. Each bloom tells a story of innovation, tradition, and passion.

A True Community Effort
This garden is the result of dedicated teamwork. Volunteers from the Rotary and Chamber/Tourism, along with supporters from Ovans Peony Farm, the Wisconsin Peony Society, and the City of Beaver Dam, have all played a role in planting, maintaining, and nurturing this special space. Their efforts ensure that the garden remains a vibrant, blooming destination for years to come.

A Celebration of Peony Excellence
The Wisconsin Heritage Peony Garden is more than a place to admire beautiful flowers—it’s a tribute to artistry, collaboration, and horticultural achievement. Take your time, breathe in the sweet scents, and marvel at the living tapestry around you. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply a lover of beauty, there’s something here to inspire and delight you.
